WhatsApp Tests Username Feature To Replace Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that could allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of their phone numbers, in what may become the most significant privacy update in the app’s history.

News360 Info learnt that the feature is currently being trialled in WhatsApp’s beta testing programme and will enable users to chat and join groups through usernames rather than phone numbers.

The update is designed to provide users with greater privacy and control, particularly in large groups or business chats, where sharing phone numbers can often feel intrusive.

According to Vanguard, leaked screenshots revealed a new “Username” field in user profiles, allowing people to select handles and hide their numbers if they choose.

While the move could bring WhatsApp closer to platforms like Instagram, Telegram, and , concerns have been raised about potential username squatting and impersonation.

To tackle the risk, WhatsApp is expected to roll out verification tools to ensure authenticity and prevent misuse.

News360 Info  understands that if the testing is successful, it could transform how over two billion people connect on WhatsApp, making the app less about numbers and more about names.

At the time of filing this report, the implementation date for the username feature on the chatting platform has not been disclosed.
