The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Debo Ologunagba, stated that former President, Goodluck Jonathan, remains a member of the party.
News360 Info reports that Ologunagba made this known on Thursday while responding to questions in an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme.
According to the PDP spokesman, one can either resign or be removed, and Jonathan has neither done so.
Ologunagba also added that the party is expecting Jonathan at the upcoming convention of the party in Ibadan, Oyo State.
He said, “Goodluck Jonathan is still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He has not resigned.
“There are two ways to leave a party. Either you resign or you are removed. But till date, Jonathan has not done any of these.
“He’s a member of the party and we expect him to be at the PDP convention coming forth in Ibadan, Oyo State.”
In related news, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Jibrin Okutepa, has opined that it would be unconstitutional for Jonathan to contest and win the 2027 presidential election.
The remarks follow speculation that Jonathan will return to active politics to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on the Arise News programme on Tuesday, Okutepa recalled that he had maintained the same position since 2013 when he wrote an article questioning Jonathan’s eligibility to seek re-election in 2015.
According to Okutepa, under the 1999 constitution, Jonathan has already served six years in office, stressing that if he wins in 2027 and serves for four years, that will total ten years in office, which is unconstitutional given that the time fixed by the constitution is 8 years.
He further anchored his argument on the Supreme Court’s decision in Marwa vs. Nyarko, which, according to him, established that no individual can occupy the office of governor or president for more than two terms of four years each under the 1999 Constitution.
