Road accident claims four in Edo

No fewer than four persons have been confirmed dead in a motor accident that occurred along the Benin-Lagos road in Edo State.

It was gathered that the accident happened on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the Ovia river bridge axis of the road in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that a truck heading towards Benin City from Lagos lost control and rammed into five other vehicles, killing three persons on the spot.

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC,, Cyril Mathew, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Benin City.

Mathew said 19 passengers were involved in the accident including four female adults, 14 male adults and one male child.

He added that the accident involved five vehicles including a truck, two Toyota Sienna buses, a space bus and a mini truck.

The FRSC sector commander explained that three persons who were trapped in their vehicles died on the spot.

He said one later died on reaching the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, bringing the total deaths to four.

The FRSC boss in the state who said those that sustained injuries were also rushed to the teaching hospital for treatment, attributed the accident to over speeding and loss of concentration.

He advised motorists to always put their vehicles in order, maintain the regulated speed limit and be wary of the road conditions.
