Residents raise alarm over safety threat from ongoing construction in Lagos

Occupants of residential and office buildings around a construction site located at 28 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, have appealed to the Lagos State Government to intervene urgently over what they described as a looming danger to lives and property posed by the ongoing project.

The multi-storey development, being handled by Diplomat Homes Limited, is alleged to be in violation of basic safety standards. Residents say that inadequate protective measures at the site have resulted in damage to vehicles and property in adjoining compounds.

According to them, the developers, reportedly linked to a prominent traditional ruler in the South West, have failed to install standard safety provisions such as barricades, safety nets, and protective shields.

This lapse, they claimed, had led to planks, stones, and other construction materials falling into neighbouring premises, destroying walls, windows, ceilings, and vehicles.

Beyond property damage, the residents expressed deep concern over the potential for serious injuries or fatalities if the issue is not addressed.

“It is only by God’s grace that no one has been hit so far,” one of the affected occupants lamented.

They questioned the silence of relevant state agencies, particularly the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, and the Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, insisting that proactive steps must be taken to enforce compliance with safety standards before the situation leads to tragedy.
