The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, has hinted on the possible increment of salaries of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, senators, and ministers.
The RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, who disclosed this, said their current salary was not tenable and unrealistic.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Shehu said the current salary structure had been unchanged since 2008 despite a hike in responsibilities and economic challenges.
He said: “You cannot pay the President of Nigeria N1.5m monthly with a population of over 200 million people and expect it to be taken seriously.
“You pay either a CBN governor or the DG ten times more than you pay the President. That is just not right. Or you pay him [the head of an agency] twenty times higher than the Attorney-General of the Federation. That is absolutely not right.”
However, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has condemned such a move, warning against increasing the salaries of politicians.
NLC stressed that it would be unjust for politicians to enjoy salary increment when the average Nigerian is battling with inflation and poverty.
