Tragedy was averted on Tuesday as a truck conveying timber materials crashed at Umuahia Timber market, while trying to drive into the market .
The long vehicle which was bringing goods into the market, fell down as the driver tried to negotiate into the market from a dilapidated entrance point.
Though no life was lost to the accident, some Tricycles and food items where destroyed by the heavy timber that fell on them.
Speaking at the scene, some of the traders, including Mrs Helen Onwuegbu and Oluchi Asoha, thanked God for saving their lives from the incident, despite the loses they incurred.
The traders attributed the incident to bad road network in the market caused by incessant flooding around the Umuahia industrial market.
The President of the Umuahia Timber Industrial market, Luke Anozie Ufomadu and the Chairman of building material section, Mr. Onyemechi Ndu confirmed the incident but thanked God for saving the lives of traders.
They drew the attention of Abia State government to the ravaging floods in the area, which they said, makes it difficult for cars and heavy duty vehicles to enter the market this rainy season.
The market leaders appealed to Governor Alex Otti to extend his ongoing infrastructural development to the Umuahia Industrial market, especially the dilapidated road and the drainage systems.
