The app, which is still in its early stages, was revealed by Dorsey in a post on X.
Jack Dorsey has announced the launch of an internet-free messaging social network to rival United States tech billionaire Elon Musk’s X.
The former chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter (now X) introduced BitChat.
He said the app is still in its early stages.
According to Dorsey, the platform is a personal project exploring Bluetooth mesh networking, message encryption and decentralised communication.
“My weekend project is to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store-and-forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things,” he wrote.
He further explained that BitChat uses a store-and-forward architecture where messages are relayed from one Bluetooth-enabled device to another until they reach the intended recipient.
Recall that in November 2021, Dorsey announced his resignation from X.
In October 2022, Musk completed the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, which he later renamed X.
