INEC Receives 12 New Party Applications, Brings Total To 122

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received 12 additional applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applications currently under review to 122.

News360 Info reports that this was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

The commission had earlier, on June 23, confirmed the receipt of 110 applications. The fresh batch, received as of Wednesday, July 2, 2025, adds to the growing list of political associations seeking official recognition.

The statement reads, “On Monday last week (23rd June 2025), the Commission announced that it had received applications from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties. We also assured Nigerians that we will be giving regular updates on the matter.

“The Commission is processing these applications transparently and in fairness to all applicants.”

Olumekun further revealed that full details of the new applicants, including their names, acronyms, addresses, and interim leadership, have been published on INEC’s official website and other public platforms for transparency.

He further stated, “We will respond to these applicants in line with the Electoral Act and Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022.”

INEC, however, noted irregularities in some of the submissions. In one case, an association has already replaced its interim secretary due to defection to another group.

“To facilitate the consideration of these applications, the commission appeals to associations to maintain consistency of their proposed leadership and addresses so that they do not, by their own actions, cause a delay to the timely consideration of their applications,” the statement added.
