Act of terrorism – Akpabio condemns Yelwata massacre

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has described the recent attack on Yelwata in Benue State, which claimed more than 200 lives, as an act of terrorism.

Akpabio, who spoke during plenary on Wednesday, said he was saddened over the incident and raised fears that such violence may have political undertones.

He warned that those behind the violence would be identified and made to face the full wrath of the law.

Meanwhile, the Senate has also launched a probe into the killing of twelve travellers from Zaria, Kaduna State, who were on their way to a wedding in the Quan’pan Local Government Area, Plateau State. The travellers were murdered in Mangu District, Mangu Local Government Area, on Saturday.

The Senate, in a resolution passed during plenary, frowned at the killings and observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims.

The red chamber, therefore, ordered its committees on national security and intelligence, defence, and police affairs to launch a holistic probe into the killings and present appropriate recommendations.

The Senate further tasked the Inspector General of Police to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the Mangun killings.
