13- year-old girl disfigured by guardian in Imo to undergo surgery

Favour Nuhu, the 13-year-old girl, whose right eye was disfigured by her guardian, Mrs Joyce Onyinye Obioma, will undergo a cataract surgery on the affected eye.

According to Chidiebube Okeoma, lead advocate of the group that rescued the minor, in a press statement, disclosed that medical investigations carried out on the girl since she was rescued by the foundation suggested that only a surgical procedure on the affected right eye could restore the minor’s sight in the affected eye.

Okeoma stated that the organization is committed to the well-being of the child and would ensure that the guardian who unleashed such wickedness on her, faces the legal consequences of her hostile action.

He hinted that the legal department of the foundation had been put on notice while waiting for the conclusion of the investigation by the police.

“Yesterday, we at Stand For Humanity Foundation took 13- year- old Favour Nuhu, whose right eye was disfigured by her wicked guardian, Mrs Joyce Onyinye Obioma to Camela Eye clinic, Owerri, Imo state.

Medical examinations by the optometrists showed that the extent of the damage was huge.

“They said that the little girl’s ordeal was beyond them and informed that only surgery could correct the damage to the eye.

They wrote a referral note for a surgery on the minor which would be conducted next week to enable the child to regain her vision in the damaged eye.”

The statement partly read, ”The foundation informed that optometrists handling the case disclosed that the pressure on the affected eye is now 31 percent when ordinarily it shouldn’t exceed 25 percent. There is a big boil on the damaged eye which has formed cataract.

Okeoma in the press statement, reaffirmed the foundation’s continuous commitment to pursuing the matter until the wickedness done to the minor is addressed.

“We thank Imo State Government, especially the Executive Secretary of the State Health Insurance Agency for undertaking to pick the complete bill for the girl’s medical procedure in this circumstance.

“While we work to ensure that this eye defect is corrected, we will ensure that this woman is prosecuted for her wickedness.
Our organization has already put our legal department on notice pending the outcome of the investigation by the police.

”We strongly condemn child battering and dehumanization. Take a child back to his or her parents if your temperament can’t withstand his or her excesses.”‘ he stated.

The minor, DAILY POST reports, was rescued from her guardian following an alarm raised by neighborhoods in the area.

After her rescue, she was taken to the State University medical Centre in Owerri and enrolled into the free Health Insurance Agency scheme of the state government.

The foundation had earlier reported the minor’s predicament to the State Police Command in Owerri and in its immediate response, the command assigned some of its officers to the foundation leading to the girl’s rescue at Ohii in Owerri.
