Former Senate President David Mark has raised alarm over the continued killings in Benue State, warning that residents may resort to self-defence if the government fails to protect them.
Reacting to the recent spate of violence that has claimed over 200 lives and destroyed property in several communities, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, on Monday in Abuja, Mark described the situation as “senseless, tragic, and unacceptable”, saying it reflects a grave failure of government.
“This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with. The government must rise to its responsibility or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” he said.
Mark emphasised that the primary duty of any government is the protection of lives and property, and any failure in this regard is a betrayal of public trust.
He called on the federal government to take decisive action to restore peace and order, stressing that the security situation in Benue has reached a critical level. Similarly, he urged the Benue State Government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, to intensify its efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.
The former lawmaker appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and local stakeholders to work closely with security agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the violence.
He said, “This is a trying moment for our people. We must unite, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must refuse to bow to fear.”
While advocating for resilience and community solidarity, Mark urged residents to remain law-abiding and uphold the values of peace and brotherhood despite the provocations.
