Man dies seeking shelter in Abuja mining pit during downpour

A 27-year-old man, Ismail Ahmed, has died after being trapped in an abandoned mining pit while seeking shelter from a heavy downpour in Pangu Village, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was revealed in a post by security analyst, Zagazola Makama on X on Sunday.

According to the post, Ahmed  was washing clothes by a nearby stream when the rain began.

“In an attempt to escape the downpour, he took shelter in a disused mining pit that was once used by illegal gold miners.

“Unfortunately, the loose soil around the pit collapsed due to the rainfall, trapping him inside,”Makama wrote.

He was rushed to Kwali General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The post further revealed that the family declined an autopsy and opted for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
