Security has been beefed up at the Ilesa Custodial Centre in Osun State following the escape of seven inmates from the facility.
The Nigerian Correctional Service had announced a manhunt following the rainfall that breached the security of its facility at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ilesa, Osun State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.
During a visit to the facility, an officer of the Correctional Service, who pleaded anonymity, said the part of the fence said to have been breached had been repaired.
Some armed police, corrections operatives, officers and men of the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps were also observed near the facility.
None of the officials approached by The PUNCH at the facility were willing to speak on record about the incident.
When asked if Osun State Police Command would be playing any role in getting the fleeing inmates arrested, the command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said, “It is our duty to go after all criminals within the nooks and crannies of Osun State.
“If you are asking specifically about the inmates, we are still waiting for the Correctional Service to make an official complaint at the nearest police formation. We will work on that. We are out to fish out criminal elements within the state.”
