Court remands man over N1.6m fraud, convicts two for Internet scam, naira abuse

Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, has remanded Alhaji Abba Uma in a correctional facility over alleged misappropriation of N1.6 million.

Uma was arraigned on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge of criminal misappropriation. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following the plea, prosecution counsel S.O. Saka requested a trial date and the defendant’s remand.

Justice Kumaliya adjourned the trial to June 4 and ordered Uma’s remand at the Maiduguri Correctional Centre.

The case stemmed from allegations that Uma sold a plot of land at Abbaganaram Housing Estate, entrusted to him, without the owner’s consent.

Meanwhile, in Abuja, Justice A.I. Kutigi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Jabi, convicted and sentenced Danji-Fari Ubadallah to two months’ imprisonment for internet fraud.

In Kaduna, Justice R.M. Aikawa of the Federal High Court sentenced a TikTok and Instagram content creator, Muhammad Kabir, to six months imprisonment or a fine of N300,000 for abusing and mutilating the naira.

Kabir was arrested at Tudun Wada, Kaduna State, after posting a video on his TikTok and Instagram accounts (@youngcee0066), where he was seen spraying naira notes on the floor, stepping on them, and daring the EFCC to arrest him.

His actions violated the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the naira.

Kabir pleaded guilty to the charge, and prosecution counsel M.U. Gadaka requested his conviction.
