Prosecutors in Finland say they have charged Biafran separatist Simon Ekpa with the offence of inciting terrorism online.
The National Prosecution Authority in a statement on Friday, says he is “a Finnish individual in a case involving suspected public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.”
Although the prosecution authorities did not name the person but but Finnish public broadcaster YLE identified him Simon Ekpa.
In its statement, the National Prosecution Authority made it clear that person charged had committed the alleged crimes in the city of Lahti between 2021 and 2024. It also said he made efforts to establish Nigeria’s Biafra region as an independent state.
Ekpa who is both a Nigerian and Finnish citizen was arrested in November by the Finnish authorities.
He was reported to have in 2022 declared activation of Biafra Government in exile and himself leader in 2023 while in exile.
The Finnish authorities had alleged that Ekpa used social media platforms to spread separatist propaganda, incite violence and encourage illegal actions, which had caused significant disruptions in the South-East of Nigeria.
His, it was learnt, followed sustained diplomatic pressure by the Nigerian government on Finland, to take action him.
