Army private arrested for assaulting food vendor over N2,000 debt in Benue

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a soldier, Private Christopher Emmanuel, for allegedly assaulting a female food vendor, identified as Doshima, in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, following a dispute over a N2,000 debt.

The incident, which occurred on 6 May 2025, was officially reported two days later, on 8 May. According to preliminary findings, the altercation reportedly began after the vendor confronted the soldier over the unpaid amount.

The situation escalated when Emmanuel allegedly accused her of insulting him during a phone call, leading to a physical attack.

In a statement issued by the Headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, the military described the incident as unfortunate and confirmed that Private Emmanuel is currently in custody.

“Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the altercation.

“The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for human rights abuses and indiscipline among its personnel,” acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Abdullahi Lawal Osabo, said in a statement on Saturday.

“We assure the general public and the victim that justice will be served.”

The Army further urged citizens to report any misconduct by military personnel through the designated Human Rights Desk helpline, rather than resorting to social media.
