A BRT bus reportedly went up in flames in the Maryland area of Lagos State on Saturday morning.
Reports obtained by News360 Info revealed that personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the fire service, and local security agencies were already on-site to manage the situation.
Vanguard reported that the bus was traveling from Ikorodu towards CMS when the tragic incident happened.
At the time of this report, there have been no confirmed reports of casualties.
A passenger on the bus informed Channels Television that the fire originated from the driver’s side, producing smoke.
She stated that the passengers initially believed the smoke was coming from nearby buses; however, the situation quickly escalated as the smoke intensified, causing widespread panic among them.
“As soon as we saw that the smoke grew bigger, we immediately rushed off the bus before the fire ignited,” she said, adding that none of the passengers sustained any injury.
She added that the driver fled the scene immediately after the fire started.
“The driver and the conductor ran away. They didn’t even wait to see what would happen to us.
“Definitely, they knew what happened. They knew the bus was bad before putting it on the road and risking our lives,” she alleged.
