Former judge in court for allegedly attacking blind housewife in Zaria

A former Upper Shari’a Court Judge, Mahmoud Shehu, has received bail from a Magistrate Court in Zaria, Kaduna State, after accusations of attacking a blind housewife.

The court, led by Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Adamu Salisu, granted bail to Shehu on Tuesday, requiring him to present two sureties who are civil servants at grade level 10.

The guarantors must provide their promotion letters, passport-sized photos, home addresses, and contact numbers.

Furthermore, Shehu is required to pay ₦100,000 as a condition of the bail.

The magistrate decided that not fulfilling these requirements would lead to Shehu being held at the correctional facility until the next hearing, which is set for February 11, 2025.

Shehu was re-indicted on allegations of criminal trespass, assault, and application of force, purportedly breaching Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.

The prosecutor, Adamu Abubakar, stated that the event took place on September 6, 2024, when the former judge allegedly broke into the residence of the visually impaired housewife, secured the main entrance, and attacked her physically.

Two women who tried to intervene were reportedly assaulted during the event. The victim incurred injuries and received treatment at the PHC Tudun Wada.

Shehu refuted the allegations when asked by the court.

The case was originally submitted to the Magistrate Court Tudun Wada, Zaria, on September 10, 2024, but experienced several postponements.

After Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi stepped down for unspecified reasons, the case was moved to Chief Magistrate Court 1, Chediya, for reassignment.

The upcoming hearing is anticipated to explore further into the accusations and the plea of the defendant.
