Woman faces backlash for contributing 70% financial support to her husband, handling 80% chores

A registered nurse and X user, Favor Grace, has stirred intense reactions online after sharing her 16-year marriage experience.

Grace revealed that she contributed 70% of the financial support to her husband while handling 80% of the household cooking.

Her experience, shared on her X handle, @FavorGrace90, quickly went viral, attracting backlash from netizens who criticised her marriage style.

“All this Twitter marriage advice dey pami. You better go outside and touch the grass. I cook 80% of the time and contribute 70% of my pay each time to the household (he does the same). Almost 16yrs and still standing. Marriage is not one size fits all,” she posted.

Despite the backlash, Grace remained resolute, dismissing criticisms as “nonsense advice.”

“Me I don’t listen to any nonsense advice here o. Social media is not real life… I just blocked out unsolicited advice,” she tweeted.

Her post, which PUNCH Online verified on Tuesday, has garnered over six million views.

In a surprising follow-up post, Grace shared photos of a Lexus GX 460 that her husband gifted her as a token of appreciation for her commitment to their relationship.

She tweeted, “On getting home from work this morning Hubby: Drop your car. I need to take it out to the car wash. I will be back by the time you are awake. Me: Ok. Thank U. A Few hrs later… Called hubby to ask for my car. That’s your new car outside. Greatest shock of my life. Lexus GX 460.”

Grace also emphasised that marriage should involve shared responsibilities, not one-sided efforts.

“If you as a man find yourself in a marriage or relationship and you are the only one giving and giving, sorry to tell you that you are dating yourself. Relationships should be partnerships where both parties support each other emotionally and financially,” she stated.

She also added: “I keep saying thank goodness I married when I did bcos na rubbish remains… honestly. The problem is they are not ready to be submissive and when I say submissive… not a slave kinda thing. When you are not submissive as a wife to your husband, forget it. Marriage can’t work. Simple like that.”

In another post, Grace praised her husband as a “destiny-ordained helper,” highlighting his selfless acts.

“Talk about a destiny-ordained helper… yes, I met him in the form of a husband. In just a year, this man single-handedly renovated my mom’s house without my kobo. He sent me a video of the house this morning, and I couldn’t recognize it. The house looks totally different,” she shared.

Grace’s revelations sparked a wave of reactions on X. While some users commended her, others criticized her approach to marriage.

Fluffy (@fluffyakaraa) wrote, “If you both contribute equally financially and you still have to handle 80% of the household labour… I’m sorry. This must be tiring, and I don’t know if it was supposed to inspire.”

Irunnia (@Irunnia) commented, “An accomplished American nurse that is married and making a lot of money is giving advice, but single and broke Nigerian women on Twitter are insulting her and telling her she is wrong. Twitter is not real life🤣.”

Sir Dickson said, “‘I’m a lover girl,’ but your love is to receive and chop like a thief. Slum dog intimacy.”

Hassan (@OLAOLUWA_01) noted, “The mental culture has made it a norm for the man to provide everything. If a man asks for help, it becomes a taboo — something that should be done without asking and out of genuine love.”

Abimbola (@Queenie_Bim) added, “I wonder where they create all the rules and standards from. Counsellors on social media doing the most.”

Victor Kovic (@Emperorkovic) remarked, “You’re an international treasure. Not even ordinary national trolling would shake you… You must be protected at all costs.”

Another user, Iruefi XXL (@IruefiNG), wrote, “That’s why I never take Twitter seriously. People who have no single idea of what goes on in the lives of others trying to dictate how it should be using imaginary standards borne out of their life of misery. May God bless your home.”
