Okija, Ibadan, FCT stampedes: Peter Obi benefitting from Nigeria’s misfortunes – Presidency alleges

The presidency on Monday accused the former Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi of benefitting from people’s misfortune.

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said Obi’s remarks lack decency and statesmanship.

Dare made the remark while criticizing Obi over his comments regarding the stampedes in Oyo, Abuja, and Anambra State, which led to the death of several people.

Posting on X, Dare wrote: “When seeking someone who benefits from the misfortune of others or from confusion — what the Yoruba people describe as Aríje nínú Màdàrú — look no further than Peter Obi.

His recent comments on the avoidable tragedies in Anambra and Oyo States lack statesmanship and decency, even as he clings to the fading echoes of his much-vaunted political victory. This attempt to score cheap political points falls flat.

In times of unfortunate tragedy, leaders are expected to speak responsibly and offer support. President Tinubu cancelled all engagements, expressed profound sadness over the loss of lives, and ordered an immediate investigation. That is the way of true leadership. These incidents have highlighted critical issues that must be addressed.

On Wednesday, over 40 children died during a stampede at a children’s fair in Ibadan, Oyo State.

On Saturday, another stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama area of Abuja, 10 people died in the incident.

In a similar situation, several people died in Okija, Anambra State during the sharing of rice palliatives.

Commenting on the situation, Obi blamed systemic failures plaguing Nigeria for the stampedes.
