In a major attempt to contain the continuing Mpox outbreak across the continent, the European Union has announced that it will be donating 215,000 doses of vaccinations to Africa.
The gift comprises 175,420 doses of the Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) vaccine, with an extra 40,000 doses supplied directly by the pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic, according to a statement issued by the EU on Wednesday.
The only smallpox vaccination that is currently licensed for use in the EU is the non-replicating MVA-BN vaccine, which is safe for use in anyone 18 years of age and older.
