Olusegun Osoba, a former governor of Ogun State, has stated that Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), the previous head of state, informed him that he was being held captive by people who assisted him in toppling Muhammadu Buhari, his predecessor.
There were rumors that in 1985, Babangida removed Buhari from his position as military chief.
Significant roles were purportedly performed by the late Sani Abacha, Aliyu Gusau, and Gado Nasko, among others, in the coup that overthrew Buhari.
