The Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced controversial cross-dresser and social media celebrity Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro handed down the six-month sentence without the option of a fine.
The controversial celebrity has been in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, since his arrest last week.
He was arrested by the EFCC for abusing the local currency.
Bobrisky had, earlier on April 5, pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of Naira abuse brought against him by the anti-graft agency.
Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Awogboro held that “the act of mutilating the Naira notes has become a menace, which has continued to damage the image of the country”.
“Enough of people mutilating and tampering with our currencies. It has to stop. His will serve as a deterrent to others,” the judge added.
Justice Awoghoro subsequently sentenced Bobrisky to six months imprisonment, without an option of fine.
The prison term will start counting from the date of his remand.
