The name of the police officer who shot and killed Bolanle Raheem on Sunday in Lagos has been made public.
The revelation was not done by the police but by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), an organisation the deceased belonged to.
In a statement, Public Secretary, Habeeb Lawal disclosed the body of lawyers got the name of the alleged culprit.
“The NBA is able to report that the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the suspected murderer of our member is one ASP Drambi Vandi”, he announced.
The spokesperson further revealed that the errant officer has been in service for 33 years.
On Monday, separate statements by the Inspector-General and the Lagos State Police Command were silent on the shooter’s name.
The covering was condemned by Nigerians, who wondered why the security agency concealed such important information.
The NBA’s disclosure now puts Vandi’s name out as expected in a case that could be prosecuted as first-degree murder.
Bolanle and her husband were returning from an outing on Christmas Day when they were flagged down near Ajah bridge.
The police team that stopped them followed their car, after which Vandi opened fire for a reason yet to ascertained.
In a video, the CEO of Tiannah Place Empire, Toyin Lawani, described the deceased as a peaceful person.
“The police told them to park. There was a car in front of them, so they were about to park, and he shot her in the chest.
She went to get pizza for Christmas; she was shot in front of her daughter. Bolanle died on the spot; she was pregnant.
Nigeria Police, when are you going to stop giving these drunkards uniform. These people on the road disturb everybody’s peace for no reason”, Lawani fumed.
