Two Nigerian athletes, Emmanuel Ineh and Toluwani Adebakin, have been found guilty by the US government of internet fraud crimes and will spend ten years in jail.
Two Nigerians believed to be housemates at William Carey University were detained after being found guilty of internet-related crimes.
According to reports, the pair were convicted before US District Judge Kristi Johnson in Mississippi and will be sentenced on February 15, 2023.
Ineh and Adebakin are believed to have confessed to the alleged crimes and also appealed for leniency in the judgment that will be handed down to them next year.
These two Nigerians are also believed to have illegally made thousands of dollars through online dating scams and deception. For their offenses, Ineh, a potential long and triple jumper, and Adebakin, a 400m and 200m runner, face a maximum of 10 years in prison.
Going to prison for ten years will undoubtedly be a severe step back, which might significantly impact their athletic career or even end it altogether.
