The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned all the political parties in the country not to collect any donations from foreign countries.
The Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, stated this during an interview with Trust TV on Sunday.
He explained that parties cannot receive financial support from foreign countries to sponsor their electioneering activities.
According to him, if such support is received, it is necessary to transfer these funds to the election commission.
Mahmood explained that all the registered political parties must disclose where they got their campaign funds and follow the rules set for spending money during the election campaign.
He added that the individual financial support also must not exceed the INEC approval.
“There is a certain amount of financial contribution that a person can give to the party in the election campaign,” he said.
The INEC Chairman, however, urged political parties and their candidates to comply with all the campaign guidelines as contravening them will attract sanctions.
