Outrage As Nigerian Medical Student Faces Deportation From Russia Over Delayed Scholarship

Nigerians are presently outraged as Yahaya, a leading African student with 5.2 GP, was suspended and has been in detention in Russia for over a month over corruption in the Sokoto Scholarship Board.

The medical university first suspended Yahaya, a recipient of the Best African Medical Student award at the Russian Centre for Scientific Research when the Sokoto government could not pay for his scholarship, which is long overdue.

The student is said to have appeared twice at a Russian State court and if eventually convicted, may be expelled from ISMU, detained or even banned from entering Russia, in the nearest future.

Yahaya was accompanied by a staff member of IMSU and a police officer to the Russian immigration office on Thursday morning (June 2, 2022) to sign a document, alleged to be a deportation form.

Meanwhile, the Head of Transparency International in Nigeria, an anti-corruption body, Mallam Auwal Musa Rafsanjani has called for the probe of the officers behind Yahaya’s ongoing ordeal.

Yahaya’s detention has stirred waves of reactions on social media as many Nigerians are deeply outraged and angered by the situation.

Some of the reactions below;

One phizbarz wrote; ”Chei can you just imaging this is so painful to emerge best student but people who are suppose to take care of your school bill cant provide. NOt that there is no money to provide just because someone somewhere decided to keep the money for him and his family is this not wickedness at its peak ? Fail system has failed another bright youth once again.”
