Bitcoin passes $40,000 for the first time

The cost of the cryptocurrency bitcoin took off past $40,000 unexpectedly on Thursday, rising $10,000 in only five days.

The cost of bitcoin was $41,130 at approximately 1800 GMT, having bounced 9.75 percent during the trading session.

The digital currency, which has known wild swings in worth, passed $30,000 unexpectedly on Saturday for the first time.
