Buhari names Abuja national stadium after MKO Abiola

President Muhammadu Buhari has named the Abuja national stadium after MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 election.

Buhari made the declaration while delivering his speech at Eagle Square, Abuja, during the Democracy Day celebrations.

“Today, I propose the renaming of the Abuja National Stadium. Henceforth it will be called the Moshood Abiola National Stadium,” he said.

Last year, the president had declared June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of Abiola, whom he gave a posthumous national honour.

Abiola won the 1993 presidential election which was annulled by the military government of Ibrahim Babaginda.

In his speech, Buhari said the current administration would consolidate on the achievements of the last four years.
June 12 was on Monday officially declared as Democracy Day as a mark of honour to Abiola, the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election.
