Maryam Sanda, the woman who allegedly killed her husband, Bilyamin Bello, on Monday told the Federal High Court in Abuja that she was three months pregnant.
Maryam, who is the daughter of Maimuna Aliyu, a former Aso Savings Bank executive, was arraigned by the police for alleged killing of son of a former PDP Chairman, Mohammed Bello.
Maryam prayed the courtt to reconsider an earlier application she filed to be released on bail pending the determination of the murder charge against her.
Maryam’s counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, pleaded with the court to give his client a soft landing for her to seek proper medical attention at this early stage of her pregnancy.
He argued that that the police failed to get the consent of the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, before filing the case.
The Police through its lawyer, Mr. James Idachaba, rejected Maryam’s fresh bail application, saying there was insufficient evidence before the court to prove that she is indeed three months pregnant.
The chief Justice Halilu, however, adjourned the matter till Wednesday to decide whether or not the defendant should be released on bail based on her pregnancy claim.
