Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, who is the Chairperson of the Lagos @50 Committee, responded to criticisms over the cost of the celebration during a press conference held on Wednesday.
Critics of Lagos @50 argued that the costs of making the celebration yearlong would be too high for a country that is struggling economically.
However, Mr. Soyinka clarified that the celebration would not last an entire year.
“Nobody, at any time, has said this is going to be a yearlong celebration,” he said to the press.
Mr. Soyinka explained that there would be events at different points throughout the year, but that this does not mean that events would be held every day of the year.
“At no time has there been any statement by anybody that his committee is going to create an event every day of the year.”
