The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing has said workers who absent themselves from work without cause will be sanctioned. The ministry in a statement by its spokesman on power, Timothy Oyedeji, said yesterday it was reacting to reports on the leadership of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) saying its Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) members should stay away from their duty posts.
It said although the reports caused panic on power supply, TCN has assured that it is safeguarding the national grid to avert any unnecessary inconvenience.
“The ministry has also confirmed from TCN that any member of staff who absents him or herself from work without a legitimate reason should be prepared to forego any compensation for the period of such absence and to face the disciplinary processes,” the statement said.
The ministry admitted bringing the security forces to the TCN headquarters in Abuja but said it was to forestall recurrence of a security breach by people it claimed could not be identified as TCN staff.
“The heightened security measures are not meant to lock out any official of TCN or any member of the public who has legitimate business with TCN,” the statement read in part.
