Ogun workers, Assembly meeting deadlock over strike

The meeting by the striking workers in the Ogun state civil service and the state House of Assembly on ended Thursday deadlocked.

The workers, whose indefinite strike action had entered its fourth day on Thursday, however gave the Assembly the opportunity to intervene in the crisis in order to see which side is being economical with the truth.

The House leadership, which included the Speaker, Suraj Adekunmbi and other principal members had invited the leadership of the labour union in the state to a parley, with a view to resolving the dispute.

But, reacting to the outcome in a chat with Daily Trust, state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Akeem Ambali said the meeting was deadlocked, “as we asked them to meet with the Executive and look into the MoU we signed with them in January in order to see whether we are justified with this action or not.

“On our part, we shall go back to our members to brief them on this meeting. But, as I speak, the strike is still on,” Ambali said.

Spokesman of the State House of Assembly, Jamiu Pese said the meeting can be described as “successful, because the workers said they would go and feed their members and come back to the House.”

Meanwhile, the state government has opened a register for workers, who are willing to report for duty in their respective ministries and agencies. But, the outcome of such move is still far from the normal bustling environment when the entire workers are on duty.
