Rivers United Football Club’s Technical Manager, Stanley Eguma, says his team has a lot to offer this season than their 1-0 win over defending champions, Enyimba International FC.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that newly-formed Rivers United on Sunday in Port Harcourt beat the seven-time league champions in a 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League fixture.
Rivers United, a product of last week’s merger of Dolphins FC and Sharks FC, scored through Fredrick Obomate in the 64th minute of the Match Day 1 game.
The match was played at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, the former Liberation Stadium, in Port Harcourt.
Eguma said: “I am excited with this win.
“Some of my key players have not been cleared by the League Management Company and we still pulled through.
“But our fans should expect good results and impressive outings when all my players are cleared.”
Eguma praised the club’s owners, the Rivers State Government, for the incentives given to the team to start the season.
He said: “I commend the state government, especially the Commissioner for Sports, Boma Iyaye, for all efforts made to give us a new beginning and we will do our best to get good results.”
Speaking also on the match, the Technical Adviser of the Aba-based Enyimba International, Paul Aigbogun, said he was not under pressure in spite of the loss.
“The league is just beginning and my team will do its best as defending champions,” Aigbogun said.
