The Federal Road Safety Corps has said there is no going back on its plan to commence the enforcement of the installation of speed limiting device by commercial and haulage vehicles operators in Nigeria from April 1.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Sunday Oghenekaro, who gave this indication, urged commercial motorists to install the device in their vehicles before April 1 when the agency would begin to arrest and prosecute defaulters.
Oghenekaro spoke in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
The corps last year held a nationwide rally ahead of the implementation of the speed limit device on vehicles whose implementation was initially fixed for June 1, 2015.
But it had to be postponed due to pressure from stakeholders. It was also felt that the period was too close to the 2015 general elections.
The first rally was at Ojota New Garage in Lagos, which was attended by virtually all the transport unions with their national and state leaders.
The unions included the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, Road Employers Association of Nigeria, the National Union of Road Transport Workers and National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.
The other event for corporate drivers and other motorists was held at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel, which provided an opportunity for more interaction among the stakeholders on how to ensure a smooth and effective implementation of the safety device project.
The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer, FRSC, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, explained that the device was introduced to reduce accidents arising from over-speeding
He said that the initiative was not proposed by the FRSC but jointly arrived at with the leadership of all transport unions and other stakeholders to raise the level of awareness for an enduring safe road culture.
According to the corps marshal, the device is a speed limiting governor which works by controlling the fuel feed to the engine, mechanical and electronic accelerator in a vehicle.
He urged commercial vehicle operators to install the device in their vehicles as agreed with the union leaders.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Road Maintenance Agency has warned members of the public against construction of unauthorised speed breakers along the roads in the state.
