A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has refused the prayer for adjournment of trial sought by Olisa Metuh’s Defence Council, Oyechi Ikpeazu.
Oyechi had asked the court for more time in order to gather documents required before commencement of trail.
He said, “By now, we thought the defendant must have perfected his bail terms, that way, he will have access to some of the documents but has not been able to do so and as such, we are asking for more time.”
Ikpeazu told the court that he and other counsels on Sunday visited Metuh in kuje prison but he had no access to valid document as proof of evidence was not served him.
This was, however, countered by the prosecuting counsel, Tahir who informed the court that the proof of evidence was served the defendant since the 14 of January, while still in custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
The presiding judge, Justice Abang Okon, however, held that the case is a summary trial and has been given enough time for Metuh to have access to the document since he was granted bail, though with conditions.
“If the defendant is unable to meet his bail conditions, that is left for him, if he had done, he would have had access to his documents, ” Okon said.
Justice Abang Okon, therefore, ruled that the trial should continue.
