The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, on Wednesday said more high profile Nigerians would soon be arrested and arraigned in court for corruption charges.
Speaking during an interactive session with online publishers and some broadcast media personalities in Abuja, Magu called on the media to support the commission as it forges ahead to rid the country of corrupt practices.
“As we speak, many more influential Nigerians are on the radar of the EFCC and, in the coming weeks, they would have their days in court,” he said.
Magu noted that the arrest and ongoing prosecution of key players in the last administration is a testimony to his resolve to fight corruption head on.
He said:
“The effect of this, which is obvious for all to see, is the investigation, arrest and prosecution of some of the most powerful forces in Nigeria, who have questions to answer on their stewardship whilst in office.
“A former National Security Adviser, former ministers, former governors, serving and retired military men, a media mogul and several others are among those we have called to answer critical questions posed as to the management of our commonwealth.”
While calling on the media to partner with the commission, Magu said: “The media occupy a vantage position to help or hamper the war on corruption in Nigeria. I quite appreciate the importance of the media as a vehicle for social transformation.
“The EFCC needs you; Nigeria needs your critical support if we are to make any headway in this important campaign against corruption.
“My plea for your support is underscored by my understanding that the forces which we are battling are powerful and some of them may want to use all platforms of the media to distract and derail us.
“If and when they do come to you, please, allow the ethics of your profession, your conscience and overriding national interest be your guide.”
The EFCC boss promised that no Nigerian would be treated as a sacred cow as far as the fight against corruption was concerned, expressing delight that he has the “backing of all the arms of government”.
