Two inmates were shot dead while several others sustained injuries on Wednesday morning during a failed jail break at the Jalingo main prison in Taraba.
Daily Trust gathered that poor condition and overcrowding in the prison was linked to the attempted jail break.
It was further learnt that the inmates started demonstration early Wednesday over poor condition and overcrowding which later degenerated.
Witnesses told our reporter that the inmates started yelling and banging on the gates of the prisons a situation that sent panic among residents of Jalingo.
“There was a terrifying sound of gunshots and screaming inside the prison “a resident closed to the prison said.
The Commissioner of Police Shaaba Alkali as well as the Civil Defense Corps Commandant Kamilu Isa also visited the prison while security was beefed up in the prison.
Taraba state Controller of the Prison Service Ibrahim Isa Bambur declined to comment on the incident.
