Markets, banks and other business activities were shutdown to avoid being damaged by the IPOB members.
Soldiers who were stationed at strategic positions were not touched as they kept on maintaining the peace with irate protesters.
Bonfires were seen at Old and New Market Roads, Ogbommanu Junction, Savoy, Nkpor Junction, Afor-Nkpor, Bridge Head, Oguta Road among others.
Reacting, the IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful said: “the soldiers killed four of our men at the Bridge Head Market at about 1:30am this morning without committing any offence.
“The soldiers came with the police, civil defence, DSS and others, attacked our men when we were not violent.
“We will continue the protest in Onitsha tomorrow unless the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu is released by President Mohammadu Buhari,” he said.
Onitsha and Npkor for thier safety, the IPOB members took over directing affairs alongside.
According to the BBC Hausa news report, the pro-Biafra protests have been going on simultaneously in some towns of Abia and Anambra since yesterday (Tuesday).
But the agitation resurfaced early Wednesday morning, which saw the agitators taking over the famous Niger bridge, that links Asaba and Onitsha towns.
But when contacted, one of the leaders of the protesters, Ikenna Madu, confirmed to BBC Hausa that the Friday mosque was actually set ablaze by persons other than the protesters.
He said none of the protesters was involved in setting the mosque ablaze, because they have been cautioning their members on taking actions like that.
Mr Madu however said the culprits might be people who disguised as members of the pro-Biafra protesters, so as to tarnish the group’s image.
Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase has ordered an increase in the number of police officers in the region to stem the protest.
The IGP also ordered the police to stop further mass gatherings in the region, as a result of the violent protests and the burning down of the Friday mosque in Onitsha on Wednesday.
