A gruesome video from Afghanistan’s Ghor province shows Taliban men stoning a young woman to death as punishment for premarital sex.
The woman, identified as 19-year-old Rokhsahana, is seen trapped in a pit as men surround her and start pelting her with stones. The woman’s cries can be heard in the 30-second footage.
Afghan officials reportedly said the Taliban and other extremists killed Rokhsahana after accusing her of having sex with her fiance and eloping with him.
According to AFP, the young Afghan woman had been married to another man against her will.
The graphic video was published by Radio Free Afghanistan, which has blurred the dying woman’s image.
The incident took place on 25 October in Firozkoh, the provincial capital of Ghor.
“(The woman) was stoned to death by Taliban, local religious leaders and irresponsible armed warlords,” Firozkoh governor Seema Joyenda told AFP.
“This is the first incident in this area, but will not be the last. Women in general have problems all over the country, but especially in Ghor. The man with whom she had eloped has not been stoned,” she added.
The woman’s fiance was reportedly punished with lashes.
The Taliban, which had ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s before being toppled in 2001, is known to carry out executions of civilians accused of breaking their rigid Islamic norms.
However, it is not only the Taliban that is known to carry out such brutal acts.
Earlier this year, an Afghan woman named Farkhunda was brutally lynched by a mob in the capital city of Kabul after she was accused of burning the Quran.
The savage incident had sparked international outrage in March.
