Bauchi-based non- governmental organization, Senator A.D Rufai Foundation, has commenced the training of 1,000 commercial female sex workers on preventive measures of HIV/AIDS and other sexual transmitted diseases.
This was disclosed by the monitoring and evaluation officer of the NGO, Hajiya Zainab Yahaya Isa, during the opening ceremony of the training programme in Bauchi.
According to her, the training is a collaboration between the NGO and the Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria (BACHATMA).
She said, “This training is being funded by the World Bank HIV /AIDS programme Development Project II and the aim is to educate commercial sex workers on how they can prevent themselves from contacting infectious diseases such as HIV and AIDS as well as other sexually transmitted diseases.
“In connection with this development, about 100 peer educators have been carefully selected from Bauchi and Katagum local government areas of the state and provided with maximum preventive package interventions as part of effort to reduce the prevailing rate of HIV/AIDS and STDs in the state”.
