Why no prisoner wanted to serve Obasanjo in Kirikiri – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker, has recounted his days with former President, Olusegun Obasanjo in the Kirikiri Maximum Prison in 1995.

Obasanjo was arrested and convicted of being part of a planned coup in 1995, having openly criticised the government of military dictator, Sani Abacha.

He was imprisoned despite protesting his innocence and there in prison, Obasanjo was said to have become a born again Christian.

For Shehu Sani, the human rights activist was arrested and jailed by successive past military regimes.

Sani found luck and was released from life imprisonment when democracy was restored in Nigeria in 1999.

He went ahead to contest the Kaduna Central Senatorial District which he won on the platform of the All Progressives Congress on 28 March 2015.

Sani, who felicitating with Obasanjo on his 85th birthday, recalled their time in prison together, saying in a tweet, “When we were in Kirikiri prison with Baba Obasanjo in ’95, no prisoner wanted to be his boy[servant] because he hardly remains food for the boys who washed our plates. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABA.”
