June 12: FG declares public holiday for Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared June 12, as a public holiday to mark 2020 Democracy Day Celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, made this known on on Monday.

Before now, Democracy Day in Nigeria had been celebrated on May 29, the day the military handed over power to civilians in 1999.

Nigeria had run democratic governance unbroken since then.

In the bid to honour the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, which was annulled by the military government of President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the Muhammadu Buhari Administration moved Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 every year.

Aregbesola in Monday’s statement congratulated all Nigerians at home and abroad for the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country.
