Emmanuel Manger, Commissioner for Works, Transport and Energy in Benue, has clarified that only Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) were authorised to verify vehicle particulars, not the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Manger said this during a chat with mewsmen on Friday in Makurdi, the state capital.
He said that the police demanded for vehicle particulars because they had the duty to tackle criminality.
“Screening vehicle particulars by the police is a way of detecting criminals.
“Apart from that, it is the duty of VIO and not any other agency of government to check or verify vehicle particulars,” he said.
The commissioner explained that VIO was responsible for the issuance of drivers’ license while the FRSC print and present license for signing by VIO.
He said that any drivers’ license signed by the FRSC instead of VIO would not be considered.
