A father and daughter have been killed after a car crashed into a family of four in South London this afternoon.

Witnesses described seeing the car, which was being chased by police, smash into a family as it turned into Lennard Road, Penge, at around 2.05pm.

They said people tried to lift the crashed car off a little girl who was walking on the pavement when it struck.

The IPCC has been called in to investigate because of police involvement in the chase.

It is believed two other people were injured in the crash.

One man who lives near the scene said: ‘It was a horrific scene on a sunny afternoon in a sleepy place.’

There were reports that two other people were also hurt in the crash, but police could not confirm this.

Police said in a statement: ‘The driver of the car has been arrested and remains in custody at a south London police station.

‘The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed. The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.’
