NUJ to prosecute impostors impersonating journalists

The Kebbi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Friday warned that it would start to prosecute persons caught impersonating journalists in the state.

The Council’s Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Jajirma, gave the warning when he led the union’s executive to pay a courtesy visit to Alhaji Yahaya Ibrahim, the Chairman of Koko/Besse Local Government Council.

Jajirma told Yahaya and his management team that the council had compiled a comprehensive list of qualified and registered journalists working in the state.

He said the council had to alert all the sole administrators in the local government areas of the activities of impostors and quacks parading themselves as journalists in the state.
This is to avoid them being scammed by the impostors, he said.

The chairman said the impostors’ activities had tarnished the image of the profession and called on members of the public to be wary of them.
He then presented a comprehensive list of registered and qualified journalists working in the state to sole administrator.

Jajirma urged the sole administrators of local government councils in the state to verify with the union any suspicious persons parading themselves as journalists.
He solicited the support of the sole administrators in sanitising the practice of journalism in the state.

The chairman also used the opportunity to request that information officers in the local government councils should participate in the training workshop to be organised by the NUJ.
The Sole Administrator of Koko-Besse Local Government Area, Alhaji Yahaya Ibrahim, in his response, commended the NUJ for taking steps to sanitise the profession.
