Ebola: Second case in Sierra Leone confirmed

0

Sierra Leone has confirmed a second case of Ebola barely one week after the first victim passed on.

Health Ministry spokesman, Sidi Yahyah Tunis, on Wednesday, confirmed that the new patient is a 38-year-old female relative to the first victim, Mariatu Jalloh.

Recall that Jalloh, a 22-year-old student, died on January 12, and subsequently tested positive for Ebola.

The new victim was a primary caregiver during Jalloh’s illness and had developed symptoms of the deadly virus while she was being monitored at a quarantine facility.

The spokesman said it is the second in less than a week, marking a further setback in efforts to end a two-year West African epidemic that has killed more than 11,300 people.

It will also be recalled that this is coming few weeks after West Africa was declared officially free of the dreaded disease.
