Unemployed man arrested for impersonating MOPOL, extorting money from motorists

Police officers attached to the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 33-year-old man, Abah Arome for impersonating a mobile police, mopol, officer and extorting money from unsuspecting motorists in the state.

Arome, was allegedly arrested at Iyana-Ipaja wearing a mopol uniform while extorting money from motorists, thereby causing gridlock.

The suspect was arrested by a patrol team after he could not give a satisfactory explanation regarding the unit or division he was attached to.

Following his arrest, Arome was taken to Area ‘M’ Police Command, Idimu where he was subsequently detained.

Confessing to the crime, the 33-year-old suspect said he was not a policeman, adding that he stole the uniform from his brother who is a serving mopol officer.

He added that joblessness led him into the act of using the uniform to extort money from motorists as he has to survive.

Arome was charged with impersonation and extortion under the criminal code.

When the charges were read to him, he however pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum. Fashola however ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody pending when he perfects his bail conditions.

The case was consequently adjourned to November 23.
