Twitter snubs Nigeria, chooses Ghana as African headquarters

Twitter has opened its first African office in Ghana to grow its Africa presence.

In this respect, the company is actively looking for talents to fill 12 roles remotely, especially in content creation, product development, engineering, and operations. Some of these roles include Data Specialist, Curation Lead, Senior Content Partnerships Manager, and Analyst Media Operations.

This move is coming 16 months after Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder and CEO and other top execs did an African tour to Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Ethiopia in November 2019.

One of the highlights of the visit is Dorsey’s interest in hiring African talents to work remotely for the company. Although the team didn’t expressly reveal a physical office was in the plans, the CEO said he’ll be returning to the continent to live for six months in 2020; a plan he couldn’t follow through because of the pandemic.

The choice for Ghana came rather surprising giving the team’s revelation about the Nigerian market. While in Nigeria, Twitter CTO, Parag Agrawal said the company sees an opportunity for technical talents in the country.

In his words, “There’s a massive opportunity here for Twitter because Nigeria has many technical talents and impactful public conversations happen here too.”

In an official statement, Twitter disclosed the reason behind Ghana’s choice, stating free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet. However, it is already in partnership with local communities in Kenya and Nigeria.

Interestingly, some of the role descriptions show that the expansion may have been originally intended for the Nigerian market. Going by reactions to this news, the company’s choice could have been suddenly influenced by how Nigerian startups have to constantly face regulatory hurdles.

Apparently, the region should expect more investment from the tech giant.
