ABSU sacks 3 lecturers, sanctions 34 students over Sex-for-grade

No fewer than three senior lecturers of the Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, have been sacked by the authorities of the state-owned university for their involvement in sex-for-grade with female students of the institution.

The lecturers were sacked having found them guilty of the allegations by the Staff Disciplinary Committee of the university.

Their dismissal was ratified by the Governing Council following the consideration of the report and recommendations of the Staff Disciplinary Committee, which found them guilty of the allegations levelled against them after investigation.

The affected lecturers are from the Department of Economics. They were accused of various offences ranging from sex-for-grade to other misconduct.

Meanwhile, to sanitise the institution of similar embarrassment and development the University Senate at its 334th Regular Meeting also approved a law on Anti-Sexual Harassment and Related Unwholesome Academic Misconduct to regulate the conduct of members of staff and students.

Consequently, the university has declared as unlawful any act of sexual harassment against students or fellow staff members by academic or non-academic staff, warning that such acts would be visited with severe sanctions.

Also, the university authority has taken various disciplinary measures against 34 undergraduate students found guilty of breaching the matriculation oath of the university.

Of the figure, the management expelled 16 students, suspended 12 indefinitely, while six were suspended for one academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uche Ikonne, while announcing the measures, however, urged the management, staff and students to be guided by the university extant rules, assuring them of the readiness of his administration to ensure conducive environment for learning and research, which will avail every member of the university community to be at their best.
